shiva, god of marijuana?, Source: http://creative.sulekha.com/india-the-land-of-hypocrites_217044_blogIn Hinduism, cannabis usage is commonly related to worshiping Shiva, so much so that he is often referred to as the god of marijuana. Legends tell Shiva napping under a cannabis plant after a tiresome argument with family and, after awaking, sampled the plant and instantly felt rejuvenated. The plant became his favorite food and a token part of his identity.

Religious pictures often display Shiva with cannabis plants, leaves or local methods of preparing cannabis.

Kind of ironic that his story is so similar to countless cannabis fanatics today: a man needing reprieve from everyday problems tried marijuana just one time and loved the experience so much it became a major part of who he was. But the story goes a step further since his enjoyment of the herb transformed history. His connection with the plant could very well be the root of sacred cannabis usage in India.

Shiva… Sativa. Very similar. While looking for a picture for this post, my sluggish brain couldn’t quite figure out how to spell Shiva. I just kept trying to type in Sativa. I wonder if the linguistic similarity is just a coincidence. But that is a question for another day!
