Todd Schorr

Today I would like to share another of my favorite artists to appreciate whilst stoned, Todd Schorr. Honestly, if you’ll enjoy something stoned, it’s likely you’ll enjoy it sober; but who doesn’t like to be high as a kite when you’re in an art gallery or museum? I’m not going to be tested on this, am I? AM I? Shit! I didn’t take very good notes.

Okay, back on track. Todd Schorr is a living American artist and one of the heavy weights of the “Lowbrow” (pop surrealism) art movement. Keep that phrase “pop surrealism” in mind when you’re looking at his art. Similar to Alex Grey, Todd Schorr‘s pieces are vivid, colorful, and packed with impressively complex and detailed images. Thematically, his art deals with some prominent pop culture themes ranging from fairy tales to television and movie references, from alien encounters to not-so-subtle commentary on modern society.

The works I have selected are just random favorites, I hope you’ll take a closer look on your own. Enjoy!

This one, I am presuming, is Todd Schorr‘s imagining of what the four horseman of the apocalypse might look like. I particularly enjoy the old silver-bullet RV in the foreground.

Not sure exactly what’s going on here either. Perhaps the devil is dreaming about Halloween? And is that a Beholder from old school Dungeons and Dragons floating on the right? Or is it an enemy from Doom 2?

I think this is a zoom-in on a larger piece. Going off what can be seen, it appears that the pope, while standing on a skeletonized fish, is talking to a little boy while Fred Flintstone (while standing on a stegosaurus who is himself standing on the tail of the aforementioned skeleton fish) is about to club His Holiness across the head. Oh yeah, a volcano in the background is spewing black smoke. Perhaps a reference to how popes are chosen? Not sure, but it’s cool as hell.

I think this one is pretty self explanatory. Who do you think wins? Santa does have a bigger weapon, but the Easter Bunny has the advantage in that his blade doesn’t have to travel as far to hit its mark. And, c’mon, we all know that any creature who’ll trade you pennies for eggs is at the end of his rope with nothing left to lose. He’s dangerous!

Well Weedists, there you have it. Todd Schorr is one odd, talented, interesting and delightfully twisted artist. I encourage you to blaze a J and try to follow your thoughts as your eyeballs try to make sense of whatever they are seeing.
