This week’s Piece of the Week is a ton of fun and comes with unprecedented access to the artist and operation. Meet the Prism Glass Works Errlephant. How cool is that?!

Prism Glassworks Errlephant

A cute, sandblasted elephant that just so happens to fill his belly with dabs… mint. Completely non-offensive and fully functional for flowers and oils (though intended for tobacco use only), errlephants serve as fantastic table pieces. These little guys have exactly what you need and nothing more. A simple 14mm down stem to a two hole diffuser – compact, efficient and reliable. The belly serves as the tank and allows for preferential water levels. You can comfortably toke out of his trunk and Mr. Errlephant will even hold a small dabber if you like. This kind of setup is the easiest to maintain and will never let you down. I know because I have one, a special furnace-pulled Diablo edition that I’ll cover later. I love the footprint, how sturdy these guys stand and how completely ergonomic they are. My friends and I have taken big snaps and chubby dabs out of the Errlephant with zero complaints; I really appreciate its durability for use as a party piece. It feels like you would need an elephant gun to take one down (haha, pun intended), a departure from many higher-end, fragile rigs. I would strongly recommend this piece to anyone in the market for a displayable yet functional piece.

Prism Glassworks

The Errlephant is one of the many fine designs I own from esteemed studio Prism Glass Works. Prism Glass Works is a du jour glass studio just outside Albany, NY. Nestled in the hot bed of the Northeast’s most revered artists, Prism Glassworks isn’t just a place that throws down – it’s one of THE places to throw down. Imagine a boutique art gallery space with an exposed kitchen cooking BADASS glass all the time. It’s a space that realistically puts glass blowing in public view at long last. Artists whose pieces we’ve showcased right here at Weedist have performed live at Prism, including Coyle, Kurt B and AJ Roberts. Furthermore, it is where my colleague and good friend Brad cuts his teeth.

Prism GlassworksPrism is the vision of multi-disciplined glass blower and entrepreneur Phil Sundling. Phil Sundling is a glass artist who just also happens to make pipes. He and his operation are the epitome of the culture beyond the cliché. Prism is a glass studio, not a head shop. They are active in all facets of artistic and functional glass work. Right along aside water pipes and accessories are gorgeous marbles, pendants, vases and bottles.

While the current climate of cannabis users may push for in-your-face acceptance, Phil takes the higher road. His mission is not to spread pipes or weed; it’s to spread glass blowing, to share art. Fortunately, pipes and pipe culture were founded on sharing and learning, so as a vehicle we couldn’t do better.

That being said, it’s amazing what a “shower and shave” does (so to speak) in the court of public opinion. After all, we are talking about pipes here right? Tie dyed T-shirts, Bob Marley shrines and fuzzy Grateful Dead posters, though cool, don’t help our cause. Fear not, Prism Glassworks is a place you can bring Mom. Prism transcends retail, turning a purchase into an experience. It is rare to go in there and not see torches lit and art coming to life. I would go so far as to say the rigs play second fiddle to all else around you.

Phil and Prism Glassworks have done an incredible job exposing glass blowing to their community. They host monthly events where the community at-large is welcomed with open arms. Live demonstrations and charitable raffles are one of many ways Prism has taken a proactive part in the Troy, NY commercial community. While other operations maintain an aesthetic forever unpalatable to the masses, Prism offers a truly unique and non-intimidating atmosphere. However, I don’t want you take my word for it, I’d love you to see first-hand. It is with great pleasure that I’d like to present the first two episodes of their reality show. Meet Phil and his team while getting a candid glimpse into the world of functional and non-functional glass art.

I would like to take a moment to directly thank Phil for his endorsement and support. Phil does not just create and teach, he enriches – and it is much appreciated. Enjoy the show!
