With vivid, high-quality images which can make you feel like you are at the featured locations and top-notch narration, Planet Earth is a must see.

But watching it while enjoying a little green makes the already-awesome experience even more incredible. If you can enjoy it on a large, high-definition TV with a decent surround sound setup, it is a mind-boggling experience.

The series contains 11 episodes, each of which explores the beauty of the following environments:

  • From Pole to Pole
  • Mountains
  • Fresh Water
  • Caves
  • Deserts
  • Ice Worlds
  • Great Plains
  • Jungles
  • Shallow Seas
  • Seasonal Forests
  • Ocean Deep

Each episode shows not only the stunning beauty of the natural environment, but David Attenborough or Sigourney Weaver (depending on if you’re watching the BBC or Discovery version)  narrates in an informative and engaging manner about the animal and plant life which call the area home.

Most of the 50-minute-long episodes explore different areas around the globe which ‘fit the bill,’ so to speak. This allows viewers to not only experience the beauty of locations within the boundary of our own country – like Death Valley – but also see how they compare with international versions of the same environment, like the Kalahari Desert. My absolute favorite scene in the series came in the Ice Worlds episode where the aurora borealis – better known as the Northern Lights – is shown over the stunning Alaskan Wilderness. While surely not as incredible as seeing them firsthand, the scene literally took my breath away as the lights floated over and was reflected by the ice-covered world.

If the purchase price (~ $70 Blu-Ray, $40 DVD) is unrealistic for you, clips of all of the episodes can be watched online (check out the BBC’s Planet Earth Youtube channel). Individual episodes can also be purchased on their website and downloaded from iTunes for ~$2.50 (the exact price depends on the current exchange rate). Behind-the-scenes clips can also be found — both online and on most DVDs of the series in circulation — which discuss the difficulties associated with filming each episode.
