Nothing beats discovering new music stoned. I am doubly blessed in that my loving gf not only “carts my stoned ass around” (thank you wubby), but has INCREDIBLE tastes in tunes. I happened to be right off a bowl of Grand Daddy Purple and we were cruising around Lake Washington on a sunny day when she put on Purity Ring.

Fast forward four long car rides exclusively listening to Purity Ring- Shrines and we’ll arrive at why I am telling you about this group. An electronic act- a Canadian duo consisting of nothing more than a man on 1’s and 0’s and a girl that doubles for a snake charmer quite nicely; these guys are awesome.

On the electronic side, I find their bass lines to be akin to every time a posh but not pretentious lounge or hotel lobby gets the music right. You know, the ones whose names we never knew and never would’ve found out, until we had an app for that.

Not a get up and groove, but a “Yes Lawd, this couch and kush must have grown in the same garden” groove. Think dubstep passed through a velvet strainer.

However, it’s while you’re well faded and sitting on these comfy ass beats that the real hypnosis begins. Purity Ring’s vocals are like a sativa laden safari. It’s not an original sound as female vocals go, kinda childish and heavily effected, but that’s not a criticism. It really is an interesting and addictive sound. So much so that I started paying attention to the lyrics. They are very corporeally evocative, but completely departed from the love and sex of more conventional dance music. Honest and thoughtful lyrics with dank bass- can a stoner ask for more?

Baked beat seekers will find solace in Purity Ring whether listening to remember or forget.
