Top Music to Listen to While High: Matisyahu

<Great Music to Listen to While High: Matisyahu>, Source: <http://forward.com/articles/14743/evolution-of-an-icon-matisyahu-s-musical-and-sp/>

Words cannot quite capture the spirit of Matisyahu. His music fuses rap, beat boxing and hip hop with reggae. Add in lyrics which more closely describe the scat singing which makes some jazz singers so famous, and you can start to get an idea of what makes his music unique ,and some of the best music for when you are high.

Depending on your desires, you can enjoy the music for what it is or allow it to take you into that deep, reflective place where each of us must confront the assumptions and belief we’ve built our lives upon. Both his lyrics and the harmonious fusions which they accompany are designed take the listener on a journey deep, where such soul-searching can occur.

Matisyahu is a deeply spiritual, Jewish activist seeking to express his own personal beliefs and inspirations through his music, and as such, each of his albums reflect the unique spot he was in his own spiritual journey during their creation. Although no longer practicing the Orthodox Judaism which slightly shocked some given his unique appearance – primarily the long facial hair, handmade clothing and perpetual presence of the yarmulke – his strong faith continues to inspire his music through the occasional use of Hebrew and Yiddish lyrics, the content of songs and his personal dedication to activism for causes.

His music is generally an inspiring and empowering call to action to live in a manner which reflects your priorities and values.

One Day: Live Acoustic with Beatboxing

His song One Day is a lovely vision of the world, which could be possible if peace became a real priority. Not only are his lyrics soothing and inspiring, his beatboxing skills are also top-notch. Sometimes I forget it is a person singing; I am so caught up in the beat (which begins at 2:30 in this video). One Day is a great place to start, but you want to get a sense for who Matisyahu is as an artist, so you’ll have to spend a bit of time exploring his music, as each and every song has its own unique theme and flavor.

Some of my other Matisyahu favorites include:
