Revolution 420

Cliff Maynard, from Pittsburgh, has become well known for his roach art across the United States. He recently relocated to the Northwest and has found even more fans within the cannabis community.

Using his unique training in mosaic art, he creates one-of-a-kind pieces that tickle the stoner imagination in so many ways.

First of all, his original pieces are made of roaches, and that is all. He doesn’t draw any lines or color anything in or embellish the roaches in any way except to trim them up as needed.

Check out some of his work, and think about for a minute…pretty cool…

Second of all – that’s a lot of roaches, which means somebody is smoking a lot of weed. And, while I sure can’t say that it’s all Cliff, I can say that Cliff’s continued success as an artist in whatever medium he chooses is a testament to cannabis consumers everywhere. Contrary to the stereotype, many of us are productive, successful, talented and creative, and Cliff is all of them.

Third – Cliff’s subjects do contain a lot of references to the stoner culture, which is to be expected. But, if you look at some of his other work, like Creation, his replication of the hands from the Sistine Chapel, it is obvious that he could use his unique medium to create any picture imaginable.

Creation

According to OCW Magazine:

“Cliff moved to Pittsburgh in his early twenties to attend the Art Institute of Pittsburgh.  He recalls learning about mosaics in art class one day. That evening, Cliff was breaking up roaches for a second generation joint when he noticed an obvious similarity between the roach paper and the tiles that are used in mosaics.  Still imprinted fresh in his brain from earlier in class, Cliff started to piece the roaches together discovering that by overlapping them he could create darker tones.”

Before Cliff dedicated his time to his roach art, he ran a successful tattoo shop in Pittsburgh. He continues as a tattoo artist today at Tony’s Tried and True Tattoo.  His talent is reflected equally well through his tattoos.

Maynard has been donating his prints to local fund raisers and events with great success. He also participates in the Hemp and Cannabis Expo at the World Famous Cannabis Cafe on the first Sunday of the month. So, next time you smoke a joint, check out Cliff Maynard’s roach art. I am sure that you will agree that it is not only great artwork while high, it’s great artwork from getting high!  Does it get any better?
