TOOL; source: http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs11/i/2006/176/d/4/TOOL_by_Cadish.jpgTOOL is therapy for your soul.

For many of us, music IS therapy. It’s also a way of getting in touch with your inner thoughts and feelings. It makes everything clearer, if only for a few moments. For some, it is a religious experience of sorts. Music is an art form that can take us away and make us see things in a new way that excites and inspires.

These are the reasons that I love to listen to TOOL, especially while high.

TOOL is about much more than “Sober,” the 1993 hit from their album Undertow. It seems that those who do not know a lot about the band associate them with “Sober” because of the song’s popular video:

While Undertow and 1992’s Opiate are dark in their own right, TOOL really didn’t enter the world of ground-breaking greatness until Lateralus was released in May 2001.

The tracks of Lateralus actually form one continuous song when played in without interruption. The title track is a work of art in itself. The song “Lateralus” refers to the human desire for a deep understanding and knowledge of life and everything in it. The time signature patterns involve the Fibonacci sequence, which is an infinite number sequence. The time signatures and lyrical patterns create a visual spiral, which supports the theme of the song: human connection through nature to expand knowledge and evolve.

We’ll ride the spiral to the end and may just go where no one’s been. Spiral out. Keep going.” – “Lateralus”

The artwork for Lateralus was done by Alex Grey, and reveals different layers of the human body. It is truly a masterpiece.

The music of TOOL has helped me get through some tough times, and it is a beautiful gift for anyone with a good bowl and an open mind.
