Cannabis 101

Patients who come into the dispensary where I work ask about good strains for a variety of different situations.

Those with chronic pain tend to enjoy indica strains, higher in CBD that is good for sleep, pain relief, etc. Others want the more alert feeling of a sativa or usually sativa dominant strains, which are the ones with a good THC content, but usually not nearly as high in THC as the typical Sour Diesel or Durban Poison strain. These sativa strains might have a great head high effect, but can often be too strong and end up rendering the user too messed up to function.

Many sativa and sativa dominant strains are great for smokers with a lower tolerance, though that’s not at all to say that a well-grown sativa dominant strain won’t make even the highest of tolerance feel as stoned and paranoid as a kid in his parent’s basement. It’s important to note that all strains have slight different effects on everyone, so everything from here on out is in context of my own personal experience and the reviews from patients who come in and discuss it with me while shopping. Each person and their body is different, and it takes some time and experimentation to find out exactly what works to get your desired effect; this is specially true if you use cannabis for a specific problem.

Many “older” (pre-dispensary) strains are often a good place to start when searching for an uplifting but not too strong high. Maui Wowie is a classic, and well-grown Maui can often be identified by its bright green leaves and a citrus-y smell. Growers tend to like these kinds of strains because they are relatively easy to grow and yield well, even in higher temperatures.

A great strain that many patients have said is good for focus and being medicated while also being able to function and get work done is Flo. There are many different strains of FLO, and no matter what I try or what shop it came from, it always has a similar, uplifting effecting without being too “stoney”.

Green Crack, a very popular if questionably named strain, has always been right on the verge of too strong for me. I’ve used it during the day, and it does have an uplifting kind of euphoria that is good for a mid-day session. Many other people I know LOVE this strain for daytime use, and the higher THC content in most strains of Green Crack definitely does make it a good candidate.

However, I often get too stoned to really get anything done if I smoke too early in the day. Even with a higher tolerance, I still prefer to go with something more laid back for my day strains. One of my favorites is a strain I haven’t seen anywhere other then Karmaceuticals: Goldberry.  A cross of Pot of Gold (a nice, up sativa) and Blueberry (typically a lighter indica), this strain has a minty smell and flavor and is right in the perfect spot for my tastes. It has a very subtle effect, which is to say that it is noticeable without being overpowering. A few patients who have tried this strain have complained that its not strong enough, but that’s because they were trying to use it as their Friday night knock-out bud; this is not going to be good for blasting off to another planet, but it will be perfect if you want to make your current planetary location just that much better. Another one of my favorites that I haven’t seen too many other places is Smile, which has more of a fruity smell and taste and definitely has always lived up to its name.

These are just a few strains that I’ve encountered that are good for active, daytime use. What are some of your favorites for day use? Let your fellow Weedists know in the comment section below!!
