Sour Diesel is a powerful strain that’s generally thought of as a sativa (and generally acts like a sativa), but it’s actually a hybrid of the legendary 91 Chemdawg and an indica strain (variously described as either Northern Lights or Super Skunk…maybe both). The ratio is generally described as 90% sativa/10% indica. Depending on who you talk to, Sour Diesel is more properly called East Coast Sour Diesel, or New York Sour Diesel, or these are all separate and completely different strains. I’m sticking with generic “Sour Diesel” myself.

Sour Diesel Source: WikipediaSour Diesel, as its name accurately suggests, smells unforgettably like a cross between lemons and diesel fuel. This is pretty cool because Chemdawg itself is reputed to smell like jet fuel (I’ve never had the pleasure, but perhaps one day…), and as a pilot myself, I get a kick out of all these inadvertent puns involving getting high. I also have a very personal connection to the Sour Diesel strain, as it was the “magic” one that unlocked my depression and released the fog in my brain 2 ½ years ago.

Sour Diesel gives you a very definite lift, without making you feel “speedy” as other sativas like Casey Jones can do. For some people, it enhances creativity and “different thinking”, and so you may often encounter it if you’re hanging around with creative types. It tastes good, smells good, and works great. You should keep in mind that most Sour Diesel plants will yield over 20% THC, so start with a small amount because it will surprise you if you aren’t used to medical grade cannabis.

As with any strain, if you use it too much, you will eventually develop a specific tolerance to it, so if you’re using it medicinally, keep the doses as light as you can.

Note: Sour Diesel tends to grow very tall and thin, so if you’re growing your own, top it early and keep it on the DL…which you’ll have to do anyway, because it smells. Unforgettably. :-)

Here are a few examples of what some other people have to say about this strain:

  • Cannabis Search says: “ gives you a bright, energetic, and quite possibly talkative wake-n-bake experience.”
  • KGB says: “may help alleviate chronic depression, as well as the ordinary blahs by encouraging a change in perspective.”
  • Canna Central says, “a very hard-hitting buzz that can last a very long time.”

TL,DR: A great all-around strain for daytime use only. Consider trying Sour Diesel before resorting to anti-depressants!
