Has anyone ever tried to get you to listen to a song, or posted music on your Facebook page saying, “OMG this is the best song ever”? Most of the time I’m like, “Yeah, whatever.” Just because they like it doesn’t mean I will.

I don’t want to be one of those people, so I’m not going to say you absolutely should listen to these artists I am recommending. But, if you have an open mind for music, you might find that these beats are great for listening to, both when you are high and when you’re not.

Great music has a way of bringing certain emotions and thoughts to the surface; it helps define or characterize them in a way that words can’t. Victor Hugo, a French poet and author of the famous Les Misérables once said, “Music expresses that which cannot be put into words and that which cannot remain silent.”

Here are what I consider to be some of top music for listening to while high. Granted, I am sightly biased, but I think if you are open to new music you will like my recommendations.

1. Ratatat: I was introduced to Ratatat during college and the music has since become an anthem to my collegiate days. A mix of electronic and instrumental beats, Ratatat is great for almost any occasion, whether it be smokin’ with your buddies, in the car, at a party; they just seem to fit into every situation. Some of their best songs are: Sunblocks, Cherry, and Alps.

2. The Decemberists: These guys have some of the best songs from a creative writing and poetical standpoint. As an English major, this really stood out to me because I have an appreciation for superior writing. Their songs are folk-like and theatrical, and many of them tell stories about various characters from all different types of life. Some of my favorite songs are: Summersong, Eli the Barrow Boy, and The Engine Driver.

3. The soundtrack to Shadow of the Colossus: This ps2 game from back in the day was much different than any other game at the time. Epic in scale, the soundtrack by Kow Ohtani has some of the best boss-battle songs I’ve heard and always gets my adrenaline going. Top tracks are: The Sunlit Earth, The Opened Way, and Revived Power.

These artists are some of my favorites to listen to while high because, more than any others, they take me to what seems like another world where my thoughts and imagination run wild, and all that matters is the sound. Not everyone may enjoy them like I do, but I hope you’ll give ’em a chance after your next smoke sesh so you can feel a little of what I feel when I listen to them.
