Medical Marijuana

Over 100 “Weed Nerds” gathered at their version of Comic-Con, The Green Avengers Subcool School of Dank in Seattle on Nov. 16-18, 2012. The SoD was a celebration freedom of assembly in post-election Washington state where 10 days earlier voters passed an initiative legalizing cannabis possession for adults. Copious quantities of serious medical grade marijuana was consumed, in public, between lectures from TGA’s master cultivators.

TGA Jinxproof takes a huge Vapex hit off an iced water pipe of his creation. SliM from VapeXhale was behind the vaporizer bar all weekend demonstrating this state of the art vaporizer.

I smoked (and vaped) the best cannabis of my life at the Subcool School of Dank. And I have smoked for 36 years. I know this is a pretty big claim to make but I am convinced it is true. And among the best marijuana that I smoked, TGA Subcool’s strains reached beyond, toward the superlative.

This was centerfold weed, pornographic in lushness and aroma, serious medical grade cannabis. This is the weed the growers keep for themselves and the SoD is one of the few places to show off one’s efforts to an educated and appreciative audience.

I tasted TGA strains that I have yet to find access to in my relatively short time of being legal: Jillybean, Ripped Bubba, the “Flav,”and a Jack the Ripper x Green Queen grown by Odie Diesel of TGA. Most exciting however was having access to weed grown by Sub himself! He donated a basketful of bags which were distributed during the Saturday lecture – how often does that happen in school? The remaining hefty grams were available for $5 donations.

TGA strains grown by Huckleberry lined up for Vapex hits at the Vaporizer bar.

Oregon Blue is a strain that TGA is currently developing in collaboration with Odie Diesel. What Sub donated came from his first outdoor grow since his recent relocation to Cali. It is Oregon Diesel x Jamaican Blueberry, normally not two of my faves, but lovely in this combination. I also found that my illness responded positively to the strain. The crop can be seen growing in episode #79 of Sub’s internet series, Weed Nerd.

Oregon Blue wasn’t the only bud to stick to my fingers, clog my grinder, and blow my mind. Believe me you HAVE to pace yourself at an event like this. When some trichome laden Romulan comes around you don’t want to miss it. I also tasted some true NYC Diesel. Pardon me, but how do y’all enjoy that? I’d never had the real thing, ’til this weekend, and just thinking about the way it coated my tongue makes me shudder.

My favorite strain of the weekend was easily TGA Jillybean, grown by Huckleberry out of Auburn. His work is not yet available to the public, but he has plans to hit regional farmers markets after his next harvest. Huckleberry had a half dozen TGA strains with him, all fragrant beyond belief, but the Jillybean was especially delicious.

It was one of High Times Top Ten strains for 2007 and its unusually strong fruit notes hit, “like a jar of mixed candy,” exactly as described in the TGA brochure. Subcool recommends Jillybean for PTSD and depression. It was developed by his wife and best friend, Mz. Jill, who was also in attendance. Wearing a plaid mini skirt and obscenely green go-go boots I might add. But in a very good way I assure you.

Many patients report that TGA’s Jack the Ripper strain is highly effective for pain relief. The High Times Top Ten winner has 26% THC.

After 10 years of research TGA has developed 24 new strains. “We depend a great deal on patient feedback and caregiver data that helps us create very accurate strain information. Feedback like what strain is best for nausea or nerve pain or depression drove most of our early breeding efforts. With modern advances in testing we now depend on seeking out rare cannabinoids like THC-V and others that we know have scientific proof these compounds show great promise in curing diseases like Parkinson’s and seriously improving the lives of those with MS.”

Not only did I have the pleasure of access to such marvelously potent strains, I was able to enjoy them in top of the line equipment. I was smart enough to bring my Pulse Glass bent neck water pipe and my actual pulse raced when I saw SliM the VapeX representative. Both companies won the popular vote at the first High Times MMJ Cannabis Cup held in Seattle this fall. Pulse won Best Glass and Best Booth while VapeX scored Best Product. Both devices hit heavy, with easy draws and great flavor.

I did not visit the corner where the dabbers had congregated. Despite their heady allure, concentrates seemed like overkill with so much delicious flower being passed around. There was frequent reminders from Stephanie, the emcee, that if you had not dabbed before, this was not the place to try it for the first time. Wise advice.

Some patients commented that they felt dabbing reflected poorly on the MMJ community and that using the propane torch made the act feel illicit and associated with harder drugs. “I believe chemically extracted cannabis products shine a very bad light on our culture, just more ammo for the right to use against us.” Subcool said in a recent interview. “Add to this that most of this BHO is poorly made and while making it you can actually blow up your home. I only endorse these type of super concentrated waxes for the terminally ill.”
