Picture this, it’s 2050 and Hollywood is in need of a ‘new’ genre for its struggling numbers. Since recycling of ideas is common, I’m sure there will be some old geezers like us thinking back on the alcohol prohibition crime dramas that we grew up with.  Think about movies like The Untouchables or more recent TV shows like Boardwalk Empire.

Consider many takeaways we had from these cultural phenomenons:

  • The government really thought they should prohibit the people from consuming alcohol
  • The government really thought they could prohibit the people from consuming alcohol
  • It created an avenue for violent criminals to become extremely wealthy because they were fulfilling the need of the people
  • It created an avenue for violent criminals to become admired and romanticized because they were fulfilling the need of the people
  • The self-labeled ‘good’ guys used tactics as dirty as the ‘bad’ guys in overzealous yet futile efforts to impose their version of morality

Will our grandchildren one day watch ‘historical’ marijuana prohibition era crime dramas from before their time with the same surprised awe that we had with alcohol prohibition ones?  Only history will tell, but many of the same components are there to make some epic Hollywood stories!
